Introduction
Database
Management System (DBMS) refers to a set of computer programs in a software
package specifically designed for the creation, maintenance, and use of databases
by following appropriate security measures. Nowadays, any business that has
small or large amounts of data needs a database to store and manage the
information. The database is an easy, reliable, secure, and efficient way to
maintain business information. There are many applications where databases are
used.
The database
management system acts as an intermediate between the database and the end-user
or third-party software. It establishes a multi-user environment allowing
multiple users to create, access, or manipulate data in the database in
parallel.
In this
article, we explain some real-time applications of DBMS. However, they are not
limited to just these applications or uses. There can be many more
applications/uses of DBMS in different fields for specific database
requirements.
Applications of DBMS
Due to the
increase in digitalization, there are many fields in which DBMS is used such as
banking, railways, Online Shopping, Telecommunication Sites, and many more
sectors. We can also say that the applications of the database management
system are countless.
Following
are some of the essential applications of DBMS in real life based on various
fields:
1. Railway Reservation
System
DBMS plays an important role in the railway reservation
system. It helps in managing the database for storing customer data like name,
mobile number, booking status, departure and arrival stations, etc.
Similarly, data like arrival and departure times of
trains, schedules, seating arrangements for vacant seats, etc. is also stored
in the database. In any case, if trains are delayed or cancelled, users are
notified through database updates. The rail route reservation framework, the
information base is needed to store the record or information of ticket
appointments, status about train’s appearance, and flight.
2. Library Management System
There are lots of books in the library so; it is
difficult to store the record of the relative multitude of books in a register
or duplicate. Along these lines, the data set administration framework (DBMS)
is utilized to keep up all the data identified with the name of the book, issue
date, accessibility of the book, and its writer. Libraries hold thousands of
books and keeping records of books in physical registers or copies can be very
difficult. Hence, DBMS has become a part of the library management system,
which enables the management to maintain book records like availability, date
of issue, book name, author name, book issuer, book taker name, etc. in
databases.
It Is very easy to check or search specific book records
from the database using DBMS. The library database stores information like book
name, issue date, author name, book availability, book issuer name, book return
details, etc.
3. Banking
Banking is considered one of the primary applications of
databases. Banks have to maintain millions of user accounts and DBMS helps in
keeping the records of each user systematically. Additionally, other baking
data like day-to-day transactions, loans, fixed deposits, balance sheets,
interest credits, ATM records, etc., everything is maintained with the help of
database management systems. Database management system is used to store the
transaction information of the customer in the database. The database keeps the
record of each user in a systematic manner. Banking databases store a lot of
information about account holders. It stores customer details, asset details,
banking transactions, balance sheets, credit card and debit card details,
loans, fixed deposits, and much more. Everything is maintained with the help of
a database.
4. Education Sector
Presently, examinations are conducted online by many colleges and universities. They manage all examination data through the database management system (DBMS). Inspite that student’s registrations details, grades, courses, fee, attendance, results, etc. all the information is stored in the database.
Apart from examinations, schools and universities also maintain databases to store the available courses, personal records of students, attendance, grades or results, and many other details.
5. Credit card
transactions
Purchases made through
credit card or credit card transaction details are also maintained using DBMS.
The database management system helps to keep the information secure and also
eases the creation of monthly or yearly statements. The database Management
framework is utilized for buying on charge cards and age of month to month
proclamations.
6. Social Media Sites
With the advent of
smartphones, the use of social media sites has increased a lot. Using these
sites, people communicate with their friends, family, or relatives from all
over the world. Thousands to millions of accounts are created daily on popular
social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram,
LinkedIn, etc. People can chat with their friends and family and make new
friends from all over the world. Social media has millions of accounts, which
means they have a huge amount of data that needs to be stored and maintained. Social
media sites use databases to store information about users, images, videos,
chats, etc. All the records are stored and managed securely and systematically
in databases with the help of DBMS. By the use of the database management
system, all the information of users are stored in the database and, we become
able to connect with other people.
7. Industries
The database management
system is the main priority of industries because they need to store huge
amounts of data. The industry database stores customer details, sales records,
product lists, transactions, etc. All the information is kept secure and
maintained by the database. In the industry, there are many employees and their
records are maintained using database systems. Apart from this, inventory management
in big industries is also done with DBMS.
8. Telecommunication
We cannot deny that
telecommunication has brought a remarkable revolution worldwide. The Telecom
field has huge data, and it is very difficult to manage big data without a
database; that is why a telecom database is required, which stores data such as
customer names, phone numbers, calling details, prepaid & post-paid
connection records, network usage, bill details, balance details, etc. It is
very difficult for telecom companies to keep or maintain such huge data without
DBMS. The database is one of the essential requirements in the telecom sectors
to store the records of call details, network usage, subscriber information,
subscription package details, bill payments, etc.
9. Broadcasting
Broadcasting involves the
distribution of audio and/or video signals to a large number of users or
subscribers. Generally, broadcast communication is done for public users like
TV (television), online streaming, internet-based media, etc.
Records of events, timings
and schedules, and subscribers’ details such as personal information, payment
status, subscription packages are all stored in the database with the DBMS.
10. Accounting and Finance
When there is big data
regarding accounting and finance, there is a need to maintain a large amount of
data, which is done with the help of a database. The database stores data such
as accounting details, bank details, purchases of stocks, invoice details,
sales records, asset details, etc. Accounting and finance database helps in
maintaining and analyzing historical data. These days, records related to
accounting and finance are not stored in physical registers, especially when
big data is maintained. Instead, such records are kept in the database using a
DBMS, making it easily accessible. Everything like sales, finance statements,
purchase of financial assets, purchase or sale of stocks or bonds, etc., are
stored with the database system.
11. Defense
Keeping records of soldiers
has become very easy with the help of DBMS in the defense sector. Apart from
this, there are many files or confidential data that need to be kept safe. DBMS
helps to keep information secure. With DBMS, it is also easy to search or find
any specific information about any soldier or other record.
12. Online Shopping
These days, online shopping
has become a big trend. No one wants to visit the shop and waste their time.
Everyone wants to shop through online shopping websites (such as Amazon,
Flipkart, snapdeal) from home. So all the products are sold and added only with
the help of the database management system (DBMS). E-commerce websites are one
of the prominent applications of the database. Websites such as Flipkart,
Myntra, Amazon, Nykaa, Snapdeal, Shopify, and many more, are online shopping
websites where people buy items online. These websites have so much data. These
websites use databases to securely store and maintain customer details, product
details, dealer details, purchase details, bank & card details,
transactions details, invoice details, etc. You can analyze the sales and
maintain the inventory with the help of a database.
Online shopping or ordering
has become popular these days. One can order most of the items without wasting
time from home using e-commerce sites. DBMS helps in keeping records of
purchase information, payment, invoice bill, order status, etc. In addition,
e-commerce sites and other online platforms take advantage of DBMS to store
customer data, maintain stock, prices, etc.

Database systems also help
manage sales and marketing data. For example, customer information, dealer
information, list of products, items bought and sold, invoices, etc.
14. Medical
There is a lot of important
data collection in the medical field, so it is necessary to use the database to
store data related to the medical field, such as patient details, medicine
details, practitioner details, surgeon details, appointment details, doctor
schedule, patient discharge details, payment detail, invoices, and other
medical records. The database management system is a boon for the medical field
because it helps doctors to monitor their patients and provide better care. In
medical, DBMS helps in keeping the record of medicines and updating the list
accordingly. Additionally, other details such as patient records, appointments,
payments, invoices, doctor schedules, and other information are also stored or
managed in databases in real-time using DBMS.

In the agriculture sector,
DBMS helps in keeping records of crops, fertilizers, machinery, and livestock
within the database. The buy rate, sell rate, cash usage, etc., can also be
updated in the database.
16. Human Resource Management
Big firms and multinational
companies hire many employees to get their work done. Human Resource Management
keeps and manages the records like name, designation, timetable, salary, tax,
etc., of the employees. DBMS helps to manage all such information in databases
securely. Any organization will definitely have employees, and if there are a
large number of employees, then it becomes essential to store data in a
database as it maintains and securely saves the data, which can be retrieved
and accessed when required. The human resource database stores data such as
employee name, joining details, designation, salary details, tax information,
benefits & goodies details, etc.
