Introduction

Database Management System (DBMS) refers to a set of computer programs in a software package specifically designed for the creation, maintenance, and use of databases by following appropriate security measures. Nowadays, any business that has small or large amounts of data needs a database to store and manage the information. The database is an easy, reliable, secure, and efficient way to maintain business information. There are many applications where databases are used.

The database management system acts as an intermediate between the database and the end-user or third-party software. It establishes a multi-user environment allowing multiple users to create, access, or manipulate data in the database in parallel.

In this article, we explain some real-time applications of DBMS. However, they are not limited to just these applications or uses. There can be many more applications/uses of DBMS in different fields for specific database requirements.

Applications of DBMS

Due to the increase in digitalization, there are many fields in which DBMS is used such as banking, railways, Online Shopping, Telecommunication Sites, and many more sectors. We can also say that the applications of the database management system are countless.

Following are some of the essential applications of DBMS in real life based on various fields:

      1.     Railway Reservation System

DBMS plays an important role in the railway reservation system. It helps in managing the database for storing customer data like name, mobile number, booking status, departure and arrival stations, etc.

Similarly, data like arrival and departure times of trains, schedules, seating arrangements for vacant seats, etc. is also stored in the database. In any case, if trains are delayed or cancelled, users are notified through database updates. The rail route reservation framework, the information base is needed to store the record or information of ticket appointments, status about train’s appearance, and flight.

      2.   Library Management System

There are lots of books in the library so; it is difficult to store the record of the relative multitude of books in a register or duplicate. Along these lines, the data set administration framework (DBMS) is utilized to keep up all the data identified with the name of the book, issue date, accessibility of the book, and its writer. Libraries hold thousands of books and keeping records of books in physical registers or copies can be very difficult. Hence, DBMS has become a part of the library management system, which enables the management to maintain book records like availability, date of issue, book name, author name, book issuer, book taker name, etc. in databases.

With the advent of smartphones, the use of social media sites has increased a lot. Using these sites, people communicate with their friends, family, or relatives from all over the world. Thousands to millions of accounts are created daily on popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. People can chat with their friends and family and make new friends from all over the world. Social media has millions of accounts, which means they have a huge amount of data that needs to be stored and maintained. Social media sites use databases to store information about users, images, videos, chats, etc. All the records are stored and managed securely and systematically in databases with the help of DBMS. By the use of the database management system, all the information of users are stored in the database and, we become able to connect with other people.

        7.     Industries

The database management system is the main priority of industries because they need to store huge amounts of data. The industry database stores customer details, sales records, product lists, transactions, etc. All the information is kept secure and maintained by the database. In the industry, there are many employees and their records are maintained using database systems. Apart from this, inventory management in big industries is also done with DBMS.

       8.     Telecommunication

We cannot deny that telecommunication has brought a remarkable revolution worldwide. The Telecom field has huge data, and it is very difficult to manage big data without a database; that is why a telecom database is required, which stores data such as customer names, phone numbers, calling details, prepaid & post-paid connection records, network usage, bill details, balance details, etc. It is very difficult for telecom companies to keep or maintain such huge data without DBMS. The database is one of the essential requirements in the telecom sectors to store the records of call details, network usage, subscriber information, subscription package details, bill payments, etc.

      9.     Broadcasting

Broadcasting involves the distribution of audio and/or video signals to a large number of users or subscribers. Generally, broadcast communication is done for public users like TV (television), online streaming, internet-based media, etc.

Records of events, timings and schedules, and subscribers’ details such as personal information, payment status, subscription packages are all stored in the database with the DBMS.

       10.   Accounting and Finance

When there is big data regarding accounting and finance, there is a need to maintain a large amount of data, which is done with the help of a database. The database stores data such as accounting details, bank details, purchases of stocks, invoice details, sales records, asset details, etc. Accounting and finance database helps in maintaining and analyzing historical data. These days, records related to accounting and finance are not stored in physical registers, especially when big data is maintained. Instead, such records are kept in the database using a DBMS, making it easily accessible. Everything like sales, finance statements, purchase of financial assets, purchase or sale of stocks or bonds, etc., are stored with the database system.
